1. What is the cost of blood test to detect thyroid function?

The blood test that tests thyroid function is called a TSH. The TSH test is part of the $5 lab test offered April 1, 2016 through April 30, 2016. If you would like more information or to schedule your labs please call 336-651-7450.

2. What is the cost of a Perc Test?

Perc test fees run by the number of bedrooms. Each bedroom is $120 so a three bedroom system would be $360. The smallest system we do for dwellings (homes) is 2 bedrooms. For more information please visit the Fees page.

3. How can I get tested for Sexually Transmitted Disesases (STDs)?

Wilkes County Health Department has a STD Clinic. To schedule an appointment, call 336-651-7450.

4. Does the health department offer TB Skin (PPD) test? If it is offered what is the cost?

Yes. We offer the TB Skin PPD test. The cost is $18 for each test. Call 336-651-7450 to schedule an appointment.

5. Does the health department do paternity testing?

No, the Health Department does not provide paternity testing.

6. Do you need a blood test for a marriage license?

No. For more information, contact the Register of deeds office at the Courthouse. The cost for a marriage license is $60, cash only. Applicants must be getting married with 60 days of the license issuance. Applicants must have a Social Security Card or legal document with their full social security number on it.

7. Can I get a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) test even if I do not live in Wilkes County?

A patient can be seen in our STD clinic from any county.

8. Does it cost anything to get tested for a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) if your under 18 years old?

STD tests are free of charge at The Wilkes County Health Department if you are under 18 years old. For more information please contact us at 336-651-7450.

9. Are there free mammograms available to women in Wilkes County?

The Wilkes County Health Department (WCHD) has 2 programs that women and men may get free mammograms that qualify. For information on qualifying for a free mammogram you may contact the WCHD at 336-651-7450.

10. Can you get a confidential Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) check at the Health Deptartment?

It will remain confidential unless the patient tests positive for a STD and doesn’t seek treatment. At this point, it becomes “hazardous” to their health and they are giving the opportunity to inform parents, if they don’t, the Health Department will in hopes that they get proper treatment.

11. How much does a flu shot cost?

Our cost of flu vaccine is $25. However, we will have vouchers from Walgreen’s for free flu vaccine for self-insured patients here who qualify. For more details please call 336-651-7450.

12. Is there a tuberculosis vaccination?

Currently there is no vaccination for prevention of tuberculosis (TB). People who have been exposed to someone with active tuberculosis may become infected, and not be actively sick, nor are they contagious. Those individuals are encouraged to take antibiotics to reduce the likelihood that they will develop active tuberculosis later, when circumstances may reduce their immune system’s ability to contain the infection. Those efforts are helping us to see a reduction in the number of cases of active TB in North Carolina. However, TB continues to be extremely contagious and requires public awareness to reduce its spread.
